Montreal wants to ban these beautiful dogs out of fear and ignorance. That means killing homeless ones in shelters, and requiring owners to jump through a million hoops to keep ones that have homes already. This has to stop. Pitbulls are amazing dogs, with some of the biggest hearts imaginable. We need to do better. They deserve better.

I know people like to shit on how the US doesn’t regulate anything and how Canada is better, but there’s a point where you’re just being stupid.

I work with dogs. A lot of them are pits or pit mixes. I have put mixes myself. People that want to ban them need a foot up their ass.

Outside of dog aggression I’ve never had any issues with a pit. However I’ve had a ton of issues with labs and golden retrievers. People think “it’s a retriever, it trains itself.” Then it goes wild or attacks a person or another dog and it’s always someone else’s fault. Out of the nearly 9 years of working with dogs I’ve only been bitten or had one of my dogs attacked once by a non retriever. It was some sort of herding dog mix.

Trust me, there are many places in the US with similar laws. It is born of lazy stupidity.

Owner’s responsibility to train the dog. Whatever breed it is.

Yes, but does it speak English? Some things don’t belong in Quebec.

Yeah but then that means A human has to take responsibility for it’s actions. And that’s not allowed anymore.

God dammit Canada.

After having a pit for 11 years, I don’t think I’ll ever want a different breed

Blame the owner, not the dog

I used to think that mean dogs were just the result of mean owners. But after seeing a really nice pitbull grab a small dog and shake it like a toy I’m not so sure. Everybody likes to think theirs is a darling that wouldn’t hurt a thing. But sometimes they do. Of course sometimes other dogs do too.

Euthanize bad owners.

I am an English Quebecer, born and raised here. I can’t believe all the ignorant stereotypes about Quebec here on oppositelock.

Granted, my comment was from a very narrow focus- I live in North Carolina, and the combination of more liberal “all creatures deserve rights” people and “the guv’ment can’t take my property” people is a mashup that would prevent such laws from being passed.

That actually could be because of the owners. Keep in mind, many of these dogs were rescued from dog fighting. Even if it’s in the hands of a good owner now, those old instincts don’t leave easily.

Too bad everywhere isn’t like that. In Indiana I really only see breed discrimination at apartments and other rentals.

I used to be one of those “some dogs are inherently dangerous” people, but, then I actually met some pit bulls and it completely turned around my thinking. Every one of them has been an extremely sweet and affectionate dog.

One, in particular, was owned by a contractor at work who would bring her into the office. She was a total Velcro dog, always following me around, always underfoot, and constantly demanding tummy rubs. Everyone in the office loved her, even the non-dog people. The idea of anybody being afraid of that thing is just totally ridiculous.

I had my pit for 15 years before I had to put her down this summer. She was the best dog ever and was a gentle friend to my son. She wanted nothing more than to sit beside me, follow my kid around or ride in the car. My neighbor’s lab mix bit me last weekend, unprovoked, badly enough I had to go get x-rays on my hand because I thought it was broken. Dogs good. People bad.

How do you define a “nice” dog though? Remember, being good with dogs requires a separate form of socialization and is as much a teaching issue as if they were good or bad dog people. Its like a people person that doesn’t like dogs. Being good with one doesn’t automatically equate to the other.

One of the cool things about it is that my boss has a Rottweiler that he brings in from time to time (she’s kind of our official door greeter), and the rottie and pit really took to each other. When the job was done and the contractor stopped coming in, she actually got all depressed and would stand staring out the window waiting for her friend to come back. That went on for about a week. She’s a total sweetheart, too. A bit more aloof though, not as openly affectionate as the pit, but that’s another dog with negative stereotypes that I haven’t seen borne out in reality.

Nice as in well socialized, generally didn’t have a problem with other dogs (same people had another dog, and they never got out of hand with each other, or other dogs that came over). But for some reason this little dog set something off in him. I was standing right there when it happened. The small dog was yappin at something, and the pit bull who had been sitting there fine just a moment before, swung around and just grabbed this dog in its mouth and started thrashing it around.
